BBC Millbank

The Brief

To upgrade the Lighting within the BBC Millbank site to include the reception and make up/shower areas to provide improved energy efficiency, light output and distribution and provide a lighting control system to the tailored needs of the Millbank Staff.

Our Approach

A full validation survey had to be carried out of the areas to be upgraded and close collaboration with the client to design and manufacture luminaires to meet this brief.
As part of the works within a 24hour BBC live environment 79 Group worked in collaboration with the BBC staff and schedule of programs to isolate and clear areas, and protect work spaces at the start of each night shift and reinstate for the following morning, to ensure that there was no disruption to daily BBC activities and the space could remain fully operational at all times.

The Solution

The 79group designed, manufactured and installed a total of 480 replacement ETL compliant LED luminaires to replace the existing luminaires within 104 rooms and spaces within live working environments that included:

TV studios, radio studios, editing suites, workshops, news booths, TV and sound galleries, Offices, meeting rooms, media hubs, reception, make up rooms, toilets, shower room and kitchen.

All the luminaires had Dali Daylight dimming, motion sensing and scene setting functionality all controlled via a CP Lighting central control system.

In addition to this each room required new wall mounted scene setting controls tailored to individual’s needs.

Reception area works involved supply and install of new lighting, HVAC, power and data to the temporary reception area and the new reception area.

Make up and shower refurbishment areas required old installation to be removed and upgrade the lighting, power, shower and ventilation system.

The program for the works to be carried out was 4 weeks of limited out of hours working.

During this program an additional 20 rooms were added with an extra 171 light fittings with no extension of program.
