Rivermead Demountable Pool

Take a look to see how we designed, supplied and installed full MEP services for a demountable, 5 lane, 25 metre swimming pool in Rivermead, Reading.

The Brief

To provide full MEP design and installation services for a fully demountable, 25 metre, 5 lane swimming pool complex in Reading. Whilst Reading Council’s longer term ambition is to provide modern new leisure and swimming facilities, they took the decision to provide a demountable complex because of the timescale involved in delivering an ambitious project of this scale and the high and increasing risk of a forced closure of Central Pool because of its poor condition

Our Approach

When it comes to tough conditions for ventilation systems, it doesn't become much tougher than in swimming pool facilities. Leisure centres are one of the most energy intensive buildings to operate. Over the last few years the trend has been to go from swimming arenas to pool recreation lands and with this change the temperature has been increased and the environment has become even more aggressive to metals.  Swimming pool ventilation is required to control humidity, maintain comfortable conditions for the user, prevent condensation and dilute chlorine and other pollutants.  With these factors to consider, we took the base design supplied by the client and developed the scheme in detail applying value engineering options where applicable.

The Solution

This project required full use of The 79group and services, from concept design to supply and full MEP installation, which is what sets us apart, which is what we do best.  We worked extremely closely with the client to interpret the original brief to a fully operational, efficient, durable, demountable scheme. Once the scheme was approved, the first process was to damp the existing services that served the current leisure centre and create a new plant room. Over 200m of ductwork finished in chlorinated rubber was installed internally and externally around the complex. The internal parts of the air handling units, including the cross flow heat-exchanger, required a special epoxy lacquer. Fully integrated new installation of all HVAC and public health services were installed throughout servicing all changing rooms, showers, public toilets and sink areas.  Our engineers carried out full electrical installation, data, fire alarms, CCTV and audio.  The complex is now fully open and being enjoyed by people throughout the area.

I've worked with Owen for a number of years and he and the team behind him have continually performed and led the way in offering creative solutions to problems, but also offering solutions that are commercial. I would highly recommend Owen personally and The 79group as a perfect partner for any retail business looking to get more from their lighting and electrical support team.
